Whitby gets the crowds. Staithes gets the quiet.

Both sit on the same stretch of North Yorkshire coast. Both have history, harbours and fish and chips worth queuing for. But they are not the same kind of weekend.

Whitby is the big day out. Abbey ruins on the hill, amusements on the front, gift shops stacked deep. It is brilliant for an afternoon – and busy most days of the year.

Staithes is the weekend you actually remember. Narrow streets built for feet, not cars. A working harbour, not a performance of one. Fewer people between you and the sea.

Here is the thing – you do not have to choose. Staying in Staithes puts you close enough to visit Whitby for the day, then come home to somewhere that empties out again by teatime.

Why stay in Staithes instead of Whitby

Fewer crowds, more cottage. Whitby’s popularity means queues and noise outside your window. Staithes keeps its pace slower, even when it is busy.

A village, not a resort. Staithes was a fishing village long before it was a holiday destination, and it still feels like one.

Closer to the Cleveland Way. Staithes sits right on the trail. Lace up and you are walking the coast path from your front door.

Dogs welcome, properly. Bring the dog. Heart Stone Cottage is set up for four paws as much as two legs.

Should you visit Whitby too?

Yes – just do not stay there. Whitby is worth the trip for the abbey, the harbour and the fish and chips. Staying in Staithes means you get both: the big day out, and the quiet cottage to come home to.

Time to breathe, with Whitby as the day trip.
