Two nights. A fire. No plan to speak of.
Here is roughly how it goes.
Friday — arrive in the dark
Park at the top of the bank and walk down. Take a torch if you have one. It is dark down there.
Bags in. Fire on. That is the whole job for Friday.
If you want feeding, The Cod and Lobster and The Royal George are both a walk away. Check they are serving before you set off in winter.
Saturday — out, then in
Get out while it is light, because it is not light for long.
The Cleveland Way runs straight through the village, so you do not need to drive anywhere to walk somewhere good. Out and back is the sensible shape of a winter walk.
Back before dark. Boots off. Fire on. Wet things in the washing machine — that is what it is there for.
Saturday evening is not a plan. It is a sofa.
Sunday — the slow one
No alarm.
Have a wander down to the harbour before you load the car. It is quieter on a winter Sunday morning than at any other time of the year, and it is worth five minutes of standing still.
Then up the bank, and home.
What to bring in winter
Something waterproof. Something warm. Boots you do not mind ruining.
A torch for the bank.
The dogs.
What not to bother with
A packed itinerary. It will rain on one of the days and you will be glad you did not book anything.
