Stay on the Cleveland Way, in Staithes

The Cleveland Way runs straight through the village.

Not near it. Through it.

Heart Stone Cottage is a two-bedroom fisherman's cottage in the old village. You can walk out of the door and onto the trail.

What a walker actually wants

  • Log burner.
  • Washing machine.
  • Hot shower.
  • Sleeps 4, so bring whoever is daft enough to come.
  • Dogs welcome — up to three small ones, or one large.
  • Two nights minimum.

Being straight with you

The old village sits down a steep bank. Parking is at the top of it.

So there is a walk down at the end of the day, and a walk up at the start.

There are steps, inside and out.

If you have walked all day, you will feel that bank. Most people decide it was worth it.

How long have you got?

Two nights

The reset

Arrive. Park at the top, walk down. It is part of it.

Bags in. Fire on. Down to the harbour before you do anything else.

Next day, one proper stretch of the trail. Out, and back.

Boots off. A drink at The Cod & Lobster or The Royal George.

Home the day after with your legs aching in a good way.

Three nights

The walking one

Same start.

Two walking days instead of one. The trail runs both ways out of the village, so you get two completely different days without moving the car.

If the weather turns, take a day in Whitby instead. The trail keeps.

Five nights

The proper trip

Three days walking. One day off. One day doing absolutely nothing.

Whitby for a day. Saltburn for another. Runswick Bay if you want a beach.

And one morning with no alarm, where the fire does the work.

Five nights is when Staithes stops being somewhere you visited and starts being somewhere you know.

Days off the trail

Whitby. Saltburn. Runswick Bay.

Ask us before you come and we will tell you what we would do with your days.
