Driving in
Come in off the A174 onto Staithes Lane. The car parks are at the top of the bank.
Don’t trust the postcode. Sat navs take TS13 5DL to the bottom of the High Street.
Use our what3words instead: ///spaceship.mural.piled
Got bags? Drive down the bank, drop them at the cottage, then take the car back up to park.
The road gets very narrow further round. You don’t need to go that far for us.
We can be hard to find the first time. The videos below show the walk down from the car park.
Parking in Staithes
Parking is at the top of the bank. There’s no parking at the cottage, so you park up and walk down into the old village.
There are two car parks at the top. Both charge.
Bank Top Long Stay Car Park (council)
Charges apply 9am to 6pm, from 1 March to 31 October. Outside those months it’s free.
Staithes Lane Pay & Display Car Park (private)
Charges apply 24 hours a day, all year. Pay at the machine, or online with Tap2Park using location code 1462.
Our tip: in winter, use Bank Top. It’s free. The rest of the year, check the signs at both car parks for the length of your stay and pick the cheaper one. Prices change, so we don’t list them here.
Pay before you walk down. Mobile signal outside the car parks can be patchy.
From the car park it’s about a 6 minute walk down to the cottage.
From the cottage: harbour and beach about 3 minutes, the pubs about 1 minute, the Cleveland Way about 1 minute.
Coming by train or bus
No car? No problem.
By train
Staithes doesn’t have a railway station. The nearest are Saltburn and Whitby. From either one, hop on the X4 bus to Staithes.
By bus
The Arriva X4 runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby, stopping at Staithes on the way. It also calls at Saltburn, Loftus and Runswick Bay. During the day it runs roughly every half hour, seven days a week.
Times change, so check the X4 timetable on Arriva’s website before you travel.
Dropping your bags off!
If you have a few too many bags to carry to the cottage, you can always drive down to the village and drop them in and then park up, watch the below video so you know your way :)
Walking from the High Street
Dropped your bags off in the village? This is the walk from the High Street up to the cottage.
Walking to the cottage from the car park
Once you have parked for your trip, you can take a nice 5-minute walk across the ridge to the cottage.
Or take the easy way
There is an easy way too. This is the walk from the car park to the cottage, the easy way.
